CANnect, the most comprehensive, most accessible collection of online learning opportunities for people with visual impairments collaborated with The Sloan Consortium to provide improved access to online learning tools.   Through a grant provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, three projects have been instituted to make online learning a reality for visually impaired students.

Study Finds That Online Education Beats the Classroom
Published: August 19, 2009
Education that includes at least some online work is more effective than classroom-only teaching, according to a major research review done for the Department of Education.

Teaching online can be a challenge---

  1.  How do I engage my students in effective discussions?
  2.  Do I have to change my content?

  3.  Is there a way to address different learning styles online?

  4. How do I communicate with my students if I can't see them?

Thinking about working with students from a distance is the first step toward reaching them and developing a "cyber" relationship.

First of all, the students of today are very different and are known as Digital Natives.

In order to prepare students, we need to look at the skills they will need in the workplace-- or 21st Century Skills.

Becoming an online teacher

Hey Debbie! I'm creating an 8 week course "Facilitating Online Instruction" for my final Master's Project. I'm using this as a resource. :) If I find more stuff, I'll add as well. How are you?

I couldn't find a definition of a wiki. What is a "Wiki'? What does the word mean? How is it different than a blog?

When you think of a "wiki," think of Wikipedia. It's basically an online website that members can edit content. It's kind of like a shared webpage among group members who can all add / edit content. For more informaiton, you can see the definition of "wiki" as provided by Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki

This is a new experience for me!! I had to navigate back and forth and finally found where to comment! Sometimes I think I am very slow to catch on! I can see where this would be a good resource for sharing information and I am glad that Debbie connected us to this! But I am like Jeannette, I did not know what Wiki was!

If you are part of the class, be sure to go to the
Seven Principles for Good Practice In Undergraduate Education (Chickering and Gamson) link in the menu on the right. You will see the chart to edit on that page.
